The Port of Hueneme, located 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, California, is the only commercial deep-water port between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Spanning over 120 acres, the Port is an important intermodal link between North America, Canada and Mexico. The Port of Hueneme consistently ranks in the top 10 Ports in the world, specifically for fresh produce and automobiles and has on-dock cold storage. As an international gateway, the Port consistently strives to increase efficiency, support the local community and maintain a safe environment. With so much constant activity, the Port wanted to expand to better serve its customers, and provide deeper waters to accommodate larger vessels and more cargo.
Today, The Port of Hueneme accepted the first two rail cars containing 16” diameter and 75’ long SeaPile® pilings from Bedford Technology. A total of 169 pilings will be used for this project. For the project, The Port of Hueneme partnered with Bedford Technology. The project will take place later this Summer. The plastic lumber will help reinforce the South Terminal where the Harbor will be dredged from 35 ft. to 40 ft. This will provide the Port the ability to allow larger ships into the Port, accept an additional 229,000 tons annually, increase efficiency and help create 563 more jobs for the local community.
Structural recycled plastic lumber by Bedford Technology was chosen for the task because the performance and environmental benefits of the material aligned with the Port’s project requirements and green initiatives. Everything from the delivery method to the material itself is environmentally-friendly. Generally speaking, one trainload of cars is equivalent to 800 truckloads, which reduces road congestion and helps keep our air cleaner. The composite pilings are also manufactured from recycled plastic, greatly reducing the amount of plastic in landfills.
